SUMMARY:Garden to Kitchen cooking experience - Motueka
DESCRIPTION:Discover the art of nutritious and sustainable eating in this hands-on workshop. This experience is designed for anyone who is dreaming of a more self-sufficient lifestyle and wants to improve their cooking skills and routine using more local\, seasonal ingredients\, or someone simply wanting to feel more inspired and creative in the kitchen.  \nAfter a stroll through the vegetable garden\, participants will prepare a few simple dishes together (fermented carrots and a seaweed lemon salt to bring back home)\, some of which will be shared during lunch (vegetarian gyoza\, meat and spinach dumplings (Maultaschen)\, weedy garden salad and a seasonal fruit cake). The instruction will be designed so that you can reproduce and incorporate these recipes into your daily life. \nYou’ll get introduced to:\n– Fermentation to boost your gut health and immunity.\n– Foraging in the garden to make the most of the seasonal and nutritious plants and “weeds”.\n– Preservation of seasonal produce to save money over time.\n– Ways to reduce food waste and packaging in your kitchen. \nThis workshop is organised by Silke Middlehauve\, who invites you to her home to share her passion. Silke\, a passionate cook for many years\, would like to share the fact that eating healthily and seasonally is within everyone’s reach and that even a small garden can provide abundance in the kitchen. \n\nWe’ll prepare lunch and eat together. SUMMARY:Can Commons Culture Make A Comeback? - Nelson
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Fairfield House (48 Van Diemen Street\, Nelson South) for an evening of cultural exploration\, future probing and feasting with an eye towards the joyful and regenerative future we can create together. \nAllow yourself to be led through a history of commons (rights of access to land and associated resources)\, their enclosure\, and the potential to shape a more equitable\, regenerative economy through the rediscovery of the ethos of the commons. Dr Catherine Knight is the author of An Uncommon Land and several other award-winning books exploring the relationship between people\, the environment\, past and future. The evening will be facilitated by Goodsense Founder and Director\, Kath Dewar\, who will help us share ideas and lead a discussion on how we might bring “Commoning Culture” to life on a larger scale here in Nelson Tasman. \nA light meal of soup and bread will be served. \nDr Catherine Knight is an award‑winning environmental historian and author of several acclaimed books including New Zealand’s Rivers: An environmental history\, Beyond Manapouri: 50 years of environmental politics in New Zealand and Ravaged Beauty: An environmental history of the Manawatu. She has a strong interest in post-growth and wellbeing economy and writes on these topics on Newsroom\, The Spinoff and on Substack. Catherine works in public policy and is an Honorary Research Associate at Massey University. \nHer newest work\, An Uncommon Land\, weaves together ancestral family stories and wider social and environmental history to trace the process of enclosure and the rise of private property\, and offers a compelling vision for a regenerative\, re‑commoned future. Copies of ‘An Uncommon Land‘ will be available for purchase and author signing. \nPlease register here: https://events.humanitix.com/can-commons-culture-make-a-comeback? \nDr Catherine Knight will also present in Motueka on Monday evening on “Weaving Worlds through the Spirit of the Commons: Perspectives from te ao Māori and European worlds” with Aneika Young. More info following this link. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2025. See the full program here.
