SUMMARY:Battle for the Banded Rail - Community planting day
DESCRIPTION:  \nBattle for the Banded Rail is a project working with local communities to increase the number of banded rail and other estuarine birds on the margins of the Waimea Inlet by restoring habitat and trapping predators. This is the first of a series of planting day. See the full winter schedule here. \n  \nPukeko Lane is off the Coastal Highway between Research Orchard Road and Westdale Road.  Drive along Pukeko Lane for 500m and you will see our flag.  Access and parking is at the top of an empty section. \nBring gloves\, a spade if you have one and drinking water.  Wear solid footwear and clothes suitable for the weather conditions.  Morning tea will be provided and all volunteers are welcome. \nNo need to register\, but if the weather is not good\, we will cancel by 8am on the day.  However\, if it’s just doubtful or light rain we will go ahead. SUMMARY:Learn how to make compost!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to plan\, build\, and maintain a compost heap.  \nOrganic nursery operator Rex Hunt will demonstrate how you can make your own compost in a short period of time. He takes a science-based approach and will explain the difference between a hot compost (short period) and cold compost (longer period). You will get to see one-year-old compost\, one-week-old compost and will make a compost pile on the day\, with a handout to take away. Come with your questions\, and any problems you may have experienced. \nRex has run an organic plant nursery since 1980 and has focused on making his own compost.  \nThis event is free\, though a Koha donation is welcome. SUMMARY:Cargo Bike Get together
DESCRIPTION:Calling all cargo bikers\, and anybody curious about cargo bikes. Join us for a short social ride and BBQ Picnic. \nFrom 1:30 pm gather at River Kitchen (81 Trafalgar St.\, Nelson)\n2pm – Leisurely ride together along the Maitai and onto St. Vincent St.\n2:30 or so\, finishing at Victory Community Centre for BBQ picnic\, and just in time for the ABC Bike Repair Workshop organised just after at the same place. \nIf you have a cargo bike (any bike you use to carry more than just yourself- long tail\, bike trailers\, kids seats\, tag-alongs etc.) bring it along. \nIt’s a chance to get to know the other cargo bikers you’ve seen pedaling 1\, 2 or 3 kids around Nelson by bike. If you haven’t got a cargo bike\, come and see the variety of options and just how useful a cargo bike can be. \nShare stories\, get kid-hauling and cargo-hauling life-hacks\, and get to know each other. It’s also a chance for your family-bike-curious friends to come and see what it’s all about. Share your favorite tips and tricks with those keen to know more\, and enjoy a fun cruisey ride followed by a BBQ together. \nBring your family\, a chair or two\, or anything else you want to bring for the BBQ. We’ll have planet-friendly (vegan) food supplied by Nelson’s Vegetarian Butcher. Feel free to bring along a plate to share\, something to throw on the BBQ\, or something to drink. \nThis will be a relaxed\, fun get-together to share tips and ideas.
