SUMMARY:Public Talk: Rethinking the System for a Changing Climate - NELSON
DESCRIPTION:Our economic system and the power structures behind it have played a defining role in our relationship with the natural environment. Biodiversity\, native ecosystems and water quality have been rapidly deteriorating over the past 50 years – so where do we go from here? \nGlenys MacLellan will take you on a journey of discovery\, exploring how we arrived at today’s environmental\, economic and social challenges. \nShe will discuss the role of neoclassical economics in shaping the modern world\, and consider how its assumptions and priorities have contributed to the ecological\, social and economic problems we face today. In order to address climate change and the human misery these systems can create\, we need to rethink the systems themselves. \nGlenys will explore what a new political and economic system should deliver\, and what aspects of the current system we should keep\, reform\, regulate or replace. \nThe discussion will be guided by participants and may focus on local priorities for Nelson Tasman\, national priorities for change\, where action could be most effective\, or other ideas from the floor. \nGlenys MacLellan is a self-described generalist and autodidact who is much more interested in trying to explain the thinking behind political\, economic and power structures than the details of their theories.  \nGlenys previously works as a bookkeeper in a variety of sectors. DESCRIPTION:Join this lunchtime webinar with Pooly\, Nelson-Tasman’s homegrown carpooling start-up\, to hear how shared journeys could become a bigger part of our region’s transport future. The Pooly app is designed to be a friction-free experience so we can all make better use of the journeys already happening on our roads. \nCo-Founders Vincent Revell and Ben Walch will share their perspectives on carpooling as one of the simplest\, most effective ways to reduce transport emissions while making travel more affordable. \nDrawing from overseas learnings\, they’ll lay out why Nelson-Tasman is well placed to lead Aotearoa in carpooling adoption. \nPooly is a response to the fuel and cost of living crises\, and to limitations of our transport system. It’s also an instrument for community connection. The platform makes it easy to find\, book and manage shared journeys\, giving drivers and passengers an intuitive and well-organised interface. \nVincent and Ben will share the story behind Pooly and the lessons from its recent local trial. DESCRIPTION:You may have seen or heard of the Department Of Conservation’s (DOC’s) Always Be Naturing campaign. Here’s a chance to experience what it’s all about. Join DOC guides for a forest ecological walk and meditation on the loop track in the Tītoki Reserve. This track winds through a pocket of native bush in the Atawhai hills\, following a clear stream through a podocarp forest of towering tōtara and mataī trees. \nThe reserve is a great spot for birdwatching\, so listen for the calls of the tūī and bellbird (korimako) and keep an eye out for weka. \nDOC’s vision is to see nature thriving in New Zealand. The goal is bold\, but one worth chasing. Many of you share this aspiration. And we know it’s going to take all of us–individuals\, community groups\, iwi\, businesses\, and organisations–working together to get there. \nAlways Be Naturing is a positive rallying cry for Aotearoa to come together for nature. It’s a platform to spark a nationwide movement where caring for our environment becomes something we all do: in our neighbourhoods\, backyards\, and broader community. \nWe want to raise the status of nature\, show the value it brings to us every day\, and help people connect with the incredible and unique environment we have in New Zealand.
