SUMMARY:The environment in election year: opportunities and threats
DESCRIPTION:The (very short) Annual General Meeting\, at 6.45pm\, will be followed by our usual meeting\, at 7.30pm\, with speaker\, Raewyn Peart\, Policy Director at the Environmental Defence Society (EDS). Her topic will be – “The environment in election year: opportunities and threats”. \nEDS seeks to protect and restore Aotearoa New Zealand’s outstanding landscapes\, freshwater systems\, oceans and indigenous biodiversity. They do this through holding business and government to account\, strengthening the law when it is found wanting\, and supporting good environmental management practice. \nRaewyn heads EDS’s environmental policy work. She has over 30 years professional experience in environmental law and policy\, having worked as a resource management lawyer and policy adviser to business\, government and the not-for-profit sector. Raewyn has published widely on coastal\, marine and other environmental issues. In 2023\, Raewyn was awarded the prestigious RMLA Outstanding Person Award. \nAll are welcome to join us. DESCRIPTION:This film highlights how community-driven efforts to establish water-retention landscapes can impact water conservation.  It follows a group of young people grappling with the climate crisis while they weave in inspiring stories of regenerative ecosystem design to create water retention in communities\, villages\, and regions. \nThis documentary shows us how essential intact water cycles are for climate stability\, and the potential of decentralised rainwater retention systems for restoring broken water cycles\, refilling aquifers and cooling the atmosphere. \nThe film will be followed by a facilitated discussion. SUMMARY:Wildlife of the Southern Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Why a trip to the Sub Antarctic Islands?  It was a personal interest trip to see the southern part of New Zealand. The talk will give an impression of visiting the islands from a novice’s point of view. The islands we visited were Campbell Island\, Auckland Islands and the Snares.  A great resource for the islands is the book “Galapagos of the Antarctic” by Rodney Russ and Aleks Terauds. \nLesley grew up in Christchurch and attended the University of Canterbury where she earned a BSc Hons degree in geology. Since it was 1970\, she could not get a job in New Zealand\, so ended up in the outback of Western Australia working for a mining company looking for nickel. Next she married an American and moved to California where she attended the University of California at Berkeley earning a MS in Engineering Geology. Then it was back to New Zealand where her daughter and son were born. The stay was short lived\, and the family relocated to northern California in 1980. Lesley reinvented herself as a teacher and spent twenty years teaching special education in the public school system. She was active with the Boy Scouts while her son grew up in the programme. Lesley has always been active as a volunteer in her community such as being on committees and doing gardening projects. Finally\, after her retirement\, three of the family relocated back to New Zealand and have made a home in Nelson. \nTalk is at 2pm on Sunday 1st of June. \nMeet in the Activities Room\, Nelson Public Library. \nCost: $3. Whakatū Nelson must rapidly address climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing resilience to climate disruption. \nWhat we do now is crucial for determining our future. Tackling global greenhouse gas emissions will require coordination at an unprecedented scale – every community\, city and country needs to do their part. Although Nelson’s greenhouse gas emissions are small in the global context\, what we do in our city matters. \nAs the effects of climate change are increasingly being felt in Whakatū Nelson\, it is crucial that we take action now to reduce the disruption that climate change will cause to our lives and the things we care about. \nWhen it comes to the climate\, we’re all on the same team. We all share responsibility to act now\, particularly for future generations who will be impacted the most by climate change. \nThe draft Whakatū Nelson Climate Change Strategy is our path forward. It shows all of us – Council\, businesses\, landowners\, community groups\, iwi and whānau\, individuals – the roles we can play in tackling climate change. It is our collective roadmap to reduce emissions and prepare for unavoidable changes. DESCRIPTION:Are you concerned about our planetary predicament?  Are you concerned about our resilience as we face mounting risks of disruption?  Are you interested in how we might navigate a course toward a viable future?  If your answer is yes\, then this course is for you.  On this six week course you will engage with the planetary limits we are exceeding\, the destabilizing risks they present\, and the challenge of transitioning our social and economic  systems.  These are tense times and the feeling that our systems are no longer fit for purpose is growing.  This leaves many of us wondering how best to cope and what we can do. DESCRIPTION:International Climate and Resilience webinar series \nSpeaker: Wändi Bruine de Bruin\, University of Southern California \nAbstract: Climate change poses a serious threat to people around the world. Organizations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are tasked with communicating about climate change with international audiences of policy makers and members of the general public. These communications can be complex and\, in the words of one of our research participants\, “talk over people’s heads.” In this presentation\, I will discuss my ongoing work with various organizations on understanding and informing public perceptions of climate change\, and making climate change communications more accessible. \nBio: Wändi Bruine de Bruin is Provost Professor of Public Policy\, Psychology\, and Behavioral Science at the University of Southern California (USC)\, where she serves as the director of the USC Schaeffer Behavioral Science & Policy initiative. Her research aims to understand and inform how people make decisions about their personal health\, their carbon footprint\, and their household finances. She has published more than 150 peer-reviewed publications on these topics.
