DESCRIPTION:Nelson Tasman Climate Forum\, Forest and Bird and Tasman Environmental Trust have teamed up to host a series of Zoom sessions where both mayoral and council candidates will be invited to answer questions about the role they intend to play in advancing Nature and Climate  policies. \nThe recent weather events brought home how important it is to have representatives at the local government level who understand the causes of climate change\, and its effects\, including impacts on the many species with whom we humans share our region. \nDrawing on a set of prepared questions\, our candidates will be challenged on their Nature and climate credentials and aspirations. Then the session will be open to your questions. \nOur hope is that these sessions will give voters a useful overview of their options while highlighting to the candidates that there is a public expectation that Nature and climate change should be at the forefront of their thinking and their actions. \nIf you are interested in the protection and restoration of Nature\, and in climate change mitigation and adaptation at the local governance level\, and want to hear from the candidates on this subject\, this evening is for you! \nJoin us on Zoom (and in person for the Richmond meeting) on the following dates\, all meetings at 7-8pm: \nMotueka Ward: 2nd September: event passed. \nMayoral candidates: 4th of September : event passed. \nGolden Bay: event cancelled. \nLakes Murchison: event cancelled. \nRichmond: 11th of September : Hope Recreational Hall\, 184 Main Road – Hope. DESCRIPTION:Take the Jump – Kia Māia te Peke \nWebinar (Part 2) – 20th December at 7.30pm \nOn 6th December\, a webinar on Take the Jump was hosted by Our Climate Declaration\, featuring Tom Bailey\, who leads the Take the Jump global team\, and Chris Wheatley who is coordinating the Aotearoa-New Zealand adaptation of this movement through the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum (NTCF). \nThis webinar was recorded – the link to the video can be found here: \nhttps://www.ourclimatedeclaration.org.nz/take_the_jump_webinar_recording \nTom was not able to complete his talk\, as the time needed to cover the key topics proved to exceed the time available.  Tom has now graciously agreed to present the second half of this talk to the NTCF on 20th December at 7.30pm NZ time. DESCRIPTION:Tord Kjellstrom and his team will be showing a movie called ‘Too Hot to Work’.  \n\n\n\nA new global investigation on the impacts of climate change on worker’s health and productivity\, titled “Trop chaud pour travailler” (Too Hot To Work)\, was shot in Italy\, France\, Qatar\, Nicaragua\, El Salvador\, Nepal\, the United States\, and India. The film explores how heat is endangering workers’ health and how it affects their productivity\, incomes\, and businesses. It also delves into how a warmer climate may transform the way we work and how workers\, businesses\, and governments have to adapt to this growing risk. DESCRIPTION:“Rethinking Home” – innovative approaches to transforming housing options in Nelson/Tasman that better respond to our environmental and social needs \nYou are warmly invited to attend a Local Matters presentation on “Rethinking Home”\,  which will look at innovative approaches to transforming housing options in Nelson/Tasman that better respond to our environmental and social needs\,  on Wednesday 16 August 7:30pm at the Māpua Hall. \nMembers of NelsonTasman2050\, a local Housing and Urban Development Think Tank\, will discuss the housing challenges that we face in our region. Our speakers will present initiatives and innovative design approaches that better respond to the region’s environmental and social needs. \nThey will look at the pressures placed on the overburdened housing sector and explore ways that we can build more sustainably\, affordably\, and thoughtfully within our local communities. Speakers on the night are NelsonTasman2050 members Magdalena Garbarczyk and William Samuels\, both architects\, and Jan Heijs\, a civil engineer. \nThe Nelson/Tasman region ranks in the top five most expensive in the country for housing affordability. Jan Heijs says ‘our region’s residential growth has been unequally distributed to fringe suburbs and outlying towns and villages\, while living more centrally is out of reach for most‘. Willam Samuels adds ‘urban intensification has been misguided as uncoordinated backyard infill development. This has resulted in a lack of housing choice\, poor environmental qualities\, rising costs of living and rising greenhouse gas emissions.’ \nThis trend needs to be re-balanced to enable more affordable housing\, reduce our collective carbon footprint and to facilitate quality urban environments with a variety of housing options\, enabling walking\, cycling and public transport as real mobility choices. \nFeaturing an overview of the advocacy work that NelsonTasman2050 is undertaking\, along with presentations from two local architectural practitioners on their low cost\, sustainable designs\, this event is designed to generate discussion and spark ideas about what type of housing we want and what is appropriate for our local context.

SUMMARY:Freshwater - the Good\, the Bad\, the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join Lan Pham (former Environment Canterbury Councillor\, Freshwater Ecologist to hear about the wonders of our native fish and the latest on the state of Aoteroa New Zealand’s freshwater; the implications for both human health and the health of our environment; and what is happening (or not happening) nationally\, internationally and locally to ensure we can have healthy\, safe\, drinking water and freshwater ecosystems for us\, our kids and generations to come.  Lan Pham says “Clean\, healthy freshwater is absolutely critical to the health of not only our environment\, but ourselves.” \n\n\nThe evening will be complemented by a panel with Annette Litherland\, Regional Coordinator at NZ Landcare Trust and closely involved in the local Motueka and Moutere Catchment Collectives and Barbara Nicholas\, a local expert in community engagement. After a short introduction they will exchange their knowledge and take part in answering questions from the public.  The meeting will be MC-ed by Steve Richard\, owner of the Jester House\, well known in the area\, and an active member of the Moutere Catchment Collective. Although Lan is also a Green Party candidate\, this event is a non-political event with our freshwater environment as the theme of the night. \nLan Pham’s background is in Freshwater Ecology (MSc) where it was Aotearoa’s quirky endangered native fish that first got her involved in tricky intergenerational issues like freshwater pollution and climate change. Over the last 15 years Lan has worked with community groups\, schools\, farmers\, iwi and government agencies across Southland\, Otago and Canterbury on grass-roots freshwater restoration projects\,  as a freshwater ranger for DoC and as founder and trustee of Working Waters Trust. \nLan has served the last 6 years in Local Government as a Regional Councillor on Environment Canterbury from 2016 – 2022 where she championed action for nature\, climate and people. Her initial election campaign for Environment Canterbury in 2016 was launched while on a year-long placement on Raoul Island in the Kermadecs – a five-day\, 1000km boat ride away. \nLooking at the state of our freshwater environment\, Lan says: “Getting ourselves out of this mess is about leaving a better future for our kids and grandkids. We all have a part to play in this. We can all be part of this change through our votes\, through using our voice\, through taking action.”

Come along\, and you might pick up some new fixing skills. We are operating from 10am-1pm \nYou will be able to bring items for smaller repairs – examples include:\n– Electrical repairs (no large appliances\, microwaves and electric blankets)\n– Clothing\n– Small furniture or miscellaneous\n– Household items\n– Bicycles\n– Toys \n\n* Important Note*\n– One item will be accepted per household\, although if it’s not too busy\, additional items may be repaired.\n– It will be at the discretion of the Repair Café and the volunteers as to whether an item is suitable for repair\, and you’ll be encouraged to observe and engage so that you can pick up new skills too.\nSee you soon @Habitat
