Home to dwarf native forests\, rare lizards and snails found nowhere else on Earth\, Denniston is a refuge for species and ecosystems unique to the South Island. \nThis is a cinematically stunning film that showcases the raw beauty of Denniston Plateau. The film follows a colourful group of climbers\, highliners and activists on a bold mission to promote and protect this remote\, harsh West Coast landscape. Australian coalmining company Bathurst Resources has applied to extract millions of tonnes of coal on Denniston Plateau\, mostly for export. Against this backdrop\, the film asks a powerful question: what are we willing to do to defend places that cannot be replaced? \nFrom 6.15pm\, come and mingle before a screening of A Line In The Sandstone at 7pm. \nThe film will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with those involved in the campaign to prevent coal mining in Denniston Plateau. Less pollutive than cremation and not wasting valuable land like cemeteries\, Natural Burial Parks create forests from burial grounds\, and essentially\, they represent a natural way of burying our dead\, which uses the valuable nutrients in the body to establish new life. They are also a way of remembering our loved ones by creating a sense of permanence in the form of a forest or park\, where people can walk and remember those who are buried there. It could almost be described as a way to live forever. \nSome questions that may come up: \n\nWhat is a natural burial? The New Zealand documentary brings the vision of Recloaking Papatūānuku to life – a bold\, science-led initiative to restore\, regenerate\, enhance and manage over two million hectares of native forests and wetlands across Aotearoa in the next 30 years. \nJoin us for an invigorating evening with a screening of the 35 minute film\, followed by a local conversation: what does recloaking our whenua actually look like\, right here in Te Tauihu? \nAfter the film\, we’re bringing together a range of voices working on this from different angles for a panel discussion\, including  \n\nEmeritus Professor David Norton – an ecologist with a career researching and teaching at the University of Canterbury\, David is the strategic science advisor for Recloaking Papatūānuku and features in Think Like a Forest. He is passionate about better managing our native forests for biodiversity conservation and climate change resilience\, including addressing the impacts of feral ungulates.\n\n  \n\nKerensa Johnston – A lawyer\, executive and Māori governance leader with a strong interest in sustainability\, intergenerational investment and wellbeing. She served as General Counsel at Wakatū Incorporation from 2012 and then as Chief Executive from 2016-2025. Alongside other governance roles Kerensa currently chairs Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and Ngāti Tama ki te Tau Ihu Charitable Trust\, and recently joined the Board of KMTT.\n\n  \n\nElliot Easton – a restoration and conservation practitioner working across Te Tauihu\, with a focus on native planting\, assisted natural regeneration and landscape-scale restoration. DESCRIPTION:Our economic system and the power structures behind it have played a defining role in our relationship with the natural environment. Biodiversity\, native ecosystems and water quality have been rapidly deteriorating over the past 50 years – so where do we go from here? \nGlenys MacLellan will take you on a journey of discovery\, exploring how we arrived at today’s environmental\, economic and social challenges. \nShe will discuss the role of neoclassical economics in shaping the modern world\, and consider how its assumptions and priorities have contributed to the ecological\, social and economic problems we face today. In order to address climate change and the human misery these systems can create\, we need to rethink the systems themselves. \nGlenys will explore what a new political and economic system should deliver\, and what aspects of the current system we should keep\, reform\, regulate or replace. \nThe discussion will be guided by participants and may focus on local priorities for Nelson Tasman\, national priorities for change\, where action could be most effective\, or other ideas from the floor. \nGlenys MacLellan is a self-described generalist and autodidact who is much more interested in trying to explain the thinking behind political\, economic and power structures than the details of their theories.  \nGlenys previously works as a bookkeeper in a variety of sectors.
