DESCRIPTION:Come and experience Nelson’s first Certified Passive House\, and discover how to build\, renovate and garden more sustainably. \nNathan and Yuki\, two of Nelson’s leading experts in sustainable living\, will show you practical ways to build or renovate your own home and create biochar for a flourishing garden. Their architect-designed home\, conveniently located near Nelson Hospital\, stays warm year round and is heated almost entirely by the sun. \nIf you’re planning to build a new home or renovate your existing house\, this workshop will help you understand the key questions to ask before you begin. Nathan and Yuki will share practical advice on designing and renovating for better energy efficiency\, explain which improvements deliver the greatest benefits\, and help you prioritise where to invest your budget. Everyone deserves to live in a warm\, healthy and comfortable home – their goal is to give you the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions. \nYuki and Nathan will also demonstrate how to make biochar – a simple but powerful way to improve soil fertility while helping tackle climate change. Biochar stores carbon in the soil for hundreds of years\, making it an effective carbon sequestration strategy. \nThe couple are also transforming former pasture into a natural farm that works with nature rather than against it. Since 2020\, they’ve planted 1\,000 native trees and 50 fruit and nut trees. Along the way\, we pause at key moments in Earth’s evolution – from the birth of our planet and the emergence of life\, through forests\, dinosaurs and mammals\, to the appearance of humans in the final moments of the walk. \nThe Deep Time Walk is an invitation to experience our place within the living Earth. We all need to recharge from time to time\, and while we might be biased\, we think few things are more restorative than seeing nature regenerate right in front of your eyes. \nThe Kidson family are helping restore a section of the Wakapuaka awa (river)\, which has seen 70\,000+ trees planted on their land and the neighbouring Cable Bay Adventure Park (more info here). They’d love to show you what can be achieved in just five years. Come and learn about native regeneration at scale through their project\, Wakapuaka Mouri\, and stay to enjoy food and music. Less pollutive than cremation and not wasting valuable land like cemeteries\, Natural Burial Parks create forests from burial grounds\, and essentially\, they represent a natural way of burying our dead\, which uses the valuable nutrients in the body to establish new life. They are also a way of remembering our loved ones by creating a sense of permanence in the form of a forest or park\, where people can walk and remember those who are buried there. DESCRIPTION:You may have seen or heard of the Department Of Conservation’s (DOC’s) Always Be Naturing campaign. Here’s a chance to experience what it’s all about. Join DOC guides for a forest ecological walk and meditation on the loop track in the Tītoki Reserve. This track winds through a pocket of native bush in the Atawhai hills\, following a clear stream through a podocarp forest of towering tōtara and mataī trees. \nThe reserve is a great spot for birdwatching\, so listen for the calls of the tūī and bellbird (korimako) and keep an eye out for weka. \nDOC’s vision is to see nature thriving in New Zealand. The goal is bold\, but one worth chasing. Many of you share this aspiration. And we know it’s going to take all of us–individuals\, community groups\, iwi\, businesses\, and organisations–working together to get there. \nAlways Be Naturing is a positive rallying cry for Aotearoa to come together for nature. It’s a platform to spark a nationwide movement where caring for our environment becomes something we all do: in our neighbourhoods\, backyards\, and broader community. \nWe want to raise the status of nature\, show the value it brings to us every day\, and help people connect with the incredible and unique environment we have in New Zealand.
