SUMMARY:A new Nelson - Couch conversations
DESCRIPTION:The Plan: A bed enclosed by bamboo in a parking space as an invitation to sit and talk about Nelson’s future \nJohn-Paul Pochin\, initiator of the project\, explains:  – lightnelson@lightnelson.org.nz\, 021 623 207 \n“This started as an idea several years ago. I bought a hospital bed and it’s been sitting taking up space ever since but it fits with some of the conversations we’ve had in our group regarding how city space is used and how we reduce car use and how we can better use the space they take up – so the project’s time has come. \nI’m working with a small group from the Light Nelson Collective and also our S&C group to build a structure (primarily out of bamboo) around the bed to create an enclosed space that is intended to be very different from the urban environment it will be in. It is a chance to use the space for something other than parking a chunk of metal and plastic\, to slow down for a time and unwind – read a book\, listen to some music and to reflect on how we could improve our city (there will be an opportunity to record peoples thoughts). The project will happen on 15th April\, the week before Earth Day and a few days before Overshoot Day. The project is intentionally on a Saturday which is a shopping day for many (on Overshoot day we will have used up all the resources for the year). We will invite people to book some time in the bed using the free parking hour. We’ll park the bed in a parking space and use their car registration to ‘book’ the parking space using the parking meters.“

SUMMARY:“Degrowth” talk by Dr. Mike Joy
DESCRIPTION:The Local Matters Group is delighted to welcome Dr. Mike Joy back to the Tasman District for a presentation at Māpua Hall on the 17th of April. This presentation will outline the transformational change we need to make in order to stop overshooting our ecological limits. \nAn increasing number of scientists from many disciplines\, are advocating for a reorientation of our social and political priorities by abandoning economic growth as our overriding priority. In a recent Newsroom article by environment writer Dr. Catherine Knight ‘degrowth’ is described as follows:  ‘Degrowth advocates do not suggest the carte blanche reduction of economic activity. They propose the downscaling of parts of the economy that do little to contribute to human wellbeing while causing enormous harm to the environment. Advocates of degrowth propose the expansion of sectors that will support our transition to an economy that operates within planetary boundaries. Such sectors include renewable energy generation\, public transport\, social housing\, the health and care sectors\, education\, environmental restoration\, and sustainable food production\, among others.’ \nDr. Joy is an ecologist and senior researcher at Victoria University. He is well known for his expertise on climate change and for his outspoken and courageous climate advocacy.  Dr. Joy says that degrowth is inevitable and that ‘the choice is ours; managed or a train wreck.’ ‘ We need to stop overshooting planetary boundaries and put policies and incentives in place that prioritise ecological and human wellbeing over economic growth.’ Dr. Joy will provide an up to date overview of the intensifying impacts of climate change. He will debunk the negativity around degrowth and will paint a picture of our future world and lives if we embrace degrowth.   \nDoor sales only –  $10 ticket\, students with ID free. Supper included. \nCarpooling is encouraged. If you are coming from Nelson\, get in touch with one of our Forum members\, John-Paul (021 623 207 or Johnpaulpochin@gmail.com)\, who will be happy to organise this.

SUMMARY:Earth Lab Launch
DESCRIPTION:An interactive art installation in the form of a quirky laboratory incorporating research and functional experiments building on projects from the past and new works combined into a space that will provide a focal point. An opportunity to incorporate work\, ideas and cultural perspectives from the wider community and for people to learn about environmental issues (in a very wide context incorporating social issues for example)\, the problems we’ve created and the actions we need to take\, but in a fun and engaging way. A ‘living’ evolving and ongoing project to be launched on 22nd April and with an initial time span of 1 year (Earth Day to Earth Day) that will encourage a wide range of people to get involved\, bringing ideas and skills together\, sharing knowledge and strengthening our community. How can we live better and within planetary limits? \nAn Environmental Project – Highlighting the problems we face\, how we got there and how we might mitigate and reduce the impact of climate change and other human induced environmental damage. \nAn Art installation – As an art project\, The Earth Lab provides an opportunity to have a broad audience\, to engage people in environmental science and issues in new and interesting ways. The lab will be a self contained and relocatable gallery. \nA Science Project – Underpinning the project will be the related science (in a broad sense – from environmental to social). Real time experiments will feed data into the lab and provide the input to some of the artworks. \nAn Interactive Puzzle/Game Room – Like an interactive museum\, the lab will invite visitors to interact\, explore and to work together to find things out for themselves. The lab will be fun\, game like but with a serious message. Elements of the lab could be on-line. \nA Collaboration – The Lab is as much about the journey as the destination. The Lab isn’t about technology\, it’s about coming together as a community. It’s about what we can achieve if we pool our resources and our skills and we work for a common good. \nA Support Group – The problems we are facing are enormous and serious. This can be overwhelming which can lead to inaction (what is the point\, we can’t make a difference) and depression. The Earth Lab will provide a focus\, a way forward and a supportive community.
