SUMMARY:POSTPONED!! Safer Biking and Walking around Nelson - Rally for Travel Justice
DESCRIPTION:Attention please!! Rally for Travel Justice date change!\nBecause of the bad weather forecast we have changed the date  of the Rally for Travel Justice to  Sunday May 28th (from May 7th).\nWe look forward to seeing you then\, 1 pm\, at Millers Acre car park and later at the cathedral steps.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you disgruntled\, dismayed or downright disgusted that\, despite all our knowledge about global warming and the distressing evidence it presents before our eyes\, cars still rule the roost in Nelson? Empty cars are still given the kerbside space that cyclists could better use; and every one of them could have a driver about to fling open the door. People with any disability at all can’t safely cross streets; even with pedestrian refuges\, we still have to dash when cars are coming at us at 50 kph.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoundabouts\, kerbside parking\, fast speeds are all seemingly cemented in place for the benefit of motorists and to the disadvantage of all other modes of travel. Is this fair? No\, it’s not only unfair\, it’s short-sighted\, and it’s bad for human health and social cohesion.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSo let’s Rally for Travel Justice again. Meet at Millers Acre\, 1pm on Sunday 7 May\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalk\, scoot\, wheelchair or bike to the Church Steps. Please circulate far and wide the poster attached here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur map will be at the Church Steps for you to mark on your trouble spots. We put stars on any spots that have been fixed since last time – it’s not a glittering galaxy – yet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSee you there\, with or without a message to display. We’ll have plenty of placards for you to use.

SUMMARY:Our Regenerative Future\, by Greg Hart
DESCRIPTION:Hawkes Bay Sheep and Beef farmer\, Greg Hart\, will outline his transition from traditional sheep and cattle farming to a more economic and biologically resilient farm. \nGreg grew up on a family farm near Methven\, Mid-Canterbury. After gaining a Bachelor of Agriculture from Massey University and working in the agriculture industry\, he and his wife Rachel worked in partnership with Greg’s parents to develop Mangarara Station in Hawke’s Bay. After the birth of their first child in 2000\, Greg and Rachel began thinking about their legacy and the world they would be leaving for future generations. \nHe is transitioning the 600 ha traditional sheep and cattle station to a farm of the future that creates balance by developing diverse\, integrated\, regenerative farming systems\, stacking layers of different production streams and restoring ecosystems through tree planting\, sequestering carbon from the atmosphere and building healthy soil using holistic grazing techniques. He will outline how his farm is contributing to the reduction of the impact of climate change by storing more carbon in soils and also how he is achieving dual income grazing and carbon income from trees and grazing on the same area.  He has also been trialling biochar.  Greg has also been through the recent Cyclone event in Hawkes Bay and has learnt some valuable lessons. He is developing an economically and biologically resilient farm system. \nThe ethos for the farm is “Optimising Life.” \nGreg is a very good speaker and is in demand across the country.  It is a great opportunity for our region to have him speak. \nFor more information on Greg Hart https://www.mangarara.co.nz/the-farm \nPlease register \n\n \nSee other Climate Action Week events HERE or on the Event section of the website.

SUMMARY:A dream for Nelson - Come and share your ideas
DESCRIPTION:The Plan: A bed enclosed by bamboo in a parking space as an invitation to sit and talk about Nelson’s future \nJohn-Paul Pochin\, initiator of the project\, explains: \n“This started as an idea several years ago. I bought a hospital bed and it’s been sitting taking up space ever since but it fits with some of the conversations we’ve had in our group regarding how city space is used and how we reduce car use and how we can better use the space they take up – so the project’s time has come. \nI’m working with a small group from the Light Nelson Collective and also our S&C group to build a structure (primarily out of bamboo) around the bed to create an enclosed space that is intended to be very different from the urban environment it will be in. It is a chance to use the space for something other than parking a chunk of metal and plastic\, to slow down for a time and unwind – read a book\, listen to some music and to reflect on how we could improve our city (there will be an opportunity to record peoples thoughts). The project will happen on 27th of May\, during Climate Action Week. The project is intentionally on a Saturday which is a shopping day for many. We will invite people to book some time in the bed using the free parking hour. We’ll park the bed in a parking space and use their car registration to ‘book’ the parking space using the parking meters.“ \nThis event will be weather dependent\, so please check before if the weather doesn’t look great! \n\n\n \nSee other Climate Action Week events HERE or on the Event section of the website.

SUMMARY:Safer Biking and Walking around Nelson – Rally for Travel Justice
DESCRIPTION:Are you disgruntled\, dismayed or downright disgusted that\, despite all our knowledge about global warming and the distressing evidence it presents before our eyes\, cars still rule the roost in Nelson? Empty cars are still given the kerbside space that cyclists could better use; and every one of them could have a driver about to fling open the door. People with any disability at all can’t safely cross streets; even with pedestrian refuges\, we still have to dash when cars are coming at us at 50 kph. \n\n\n\nRoundabouts\, kerbside parking\, fast speeds are all seemingly cemented in place for the benefit of motorists and to the disadvantage of all other modes of travel. Is this fair? No\, it’s not only unfair\, it’s short-sighted\, and it’s bad for human health and social cohesion. \n\nSo let’s Rally for Travel Justice again. Meet at Millers Acre\, 1 pm on Sunday 28th MayWalk\, scoot\, wheelchair or bike to the Church Steps. Please circulate far and wide the poster attached here. \nOur map will be at the Church Steps for you to mark on your trouble spots. We put stars on any spots that have been fixed since last time – it’s not a glittering galaxy – yet. \nSee you there\, with or without a message to display. We’ll have plenty of placards for you to use. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nSee other Climate Action Week events HERE or on the Event section of the website.

SUMMARY:Paul Winton and the 1.5° Project - How to decarbonise our Transport system? Webinar
DESCRIPTION:New Zealand can deliver on a 1.5ºC future\nTo achieve this\, transportation in New Zealand must be largely decarbonised by 2030. \nOur current transport system no longer meets our needs. \nBy 2030 our transport system will be safe\, healthy\, accessible to all\, resilient and decarbonised. \nJoin us during this webinar where Dr Paul Winton will tell us a little bit more about the 1.5° Project and his ideas on how to achieve this objective! After Paul speaks\, we’ll hear from transport staff at Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council about what’s happening to reduce transport emissions here in our region. \nMore info about the 1.5° Project here: The 1Point5 Project \nPaul Winton has a PhD in engineering\, is a former McKinsey & Company consultant and a founder of Temple Capital Investment Specialists. His day job is to advise funds and corporates on investments and acquisitions\, typically in industries undergoing or on the cusp of disruptive change.  \nFor the past year he has been working on identifying the most pragmatic path for New Zealand to meet its obligations under a 1.5°C scenario as outlined in the Zero Carbon Act of 2019. \nPlease register here to receive the zoom link for the meeting: Registration
