DESCRIPTION:The Nelson Tasman Climate Forum  is offering  a 2 hour workshop on planning and building a compost heap on site. \nThe Tutor is Rex Hunt who has run an organic plant nursery since 1980 and has focussed on making his own compost. \nRex has both 1 and 3 year old compost heaps to demonstrate how they change over time\, sequester carbon and remain aerobic. \nWe will also build one ourselves at the Workshop. DESCRIPTION:Following the success of last year’s EV tradeshow during Climate Action Week\, we are please to announce that an Electric Vehicle (EV) tradeshow and test drive session will be organised again this year. \nLearn and explore what  electric vehicles and PHEV models are available in the NZ market. \nThis is your chance to ask questions\, drive an electric vehicle\, talk to EV enthusiasts about their experiences\, to make an informed decision about your next mode of transportation. \nThis event is a co-organisation of Nelson City Council and the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum. \nPlease note that this event should normally showcase only Electric cars. If you are interested by testing or presenting an Ebike during Climate Action week\, visit this page. \nAmongst the many models coming from our different car dealers\, we’ll have the pleasure to welcome the Tesla once again. DESCRIPTION:In the workshop\, you will explore practices to enhance sensory awareness\, and to develop your skills of attentiveness and focus. \nYou will be inspired to re-examine your own ways of perceiving\, thinking about\, and connecting with the natural world. \nThere will be ample space and opportunity to nurture mindfulness\, and to photographically capture the natural beauty of Queen’s Gardens. \nNOTE: Mastering the technical aspects of taking photographs is not the focus of this workshop. Therefore\, you are welcome to use any camera(s) that you would like. \nTea will be prepared and served towards the end of the workshop. Bring water\, your camera\, appropriate rain/sun protection depending upon the weather\, and if possible\, something to sit on that is easily carried. \nABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR – Mark has been teaching and facilitating internationally for the past 25 years. His specialism is ecopsychology/transpersonal psychology\, for which he graduated with a masters degree in Colorado\, USA. At present\, he is offering online educational programmes in ecopsychology\, as well as in-person workshops and consultations facilitating nature connection and ecopsychological awareness.

SUMMARY:Doughnuts and Degrowth - Imagining a New Future
DESCRIPTION:Gareth Hughes will share his insights gained from twenty years pushing for transformational change as an activist and politician. He will explore how our current economic system operates and the positive alternatives inspiring people around the world. Gareth is the Aotearoa Country Lead of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll). \nJack Santa Barbara will focus on the key tasks of the transformation: reducing energy and material throughput\, and ensuring supports are in place for the anticipated disruptions this will create. Jack Santa Barbara\, a Motueka local\, is a retired CEO and academic. He has a long standing interest in sustainability and social justice issues and writes extensively in the New Zealand media. \nThe topic of ‘degrowth’ was introduced\, at our April Local Matters event\, by Dr. Mike Joy in a packed Mãpua Hall. Dr. Joy spoke about the inevitability of degrowth and the need to prioritize ecological and human wellbeing over economic growth. Our June speakers will further explore the practical implications and benefits of degrowth. \nThe reference to ‘doughnuts’ comes from the well-known book “Doughnut Economics” by Kate Raworth. Doughnut Economics is a theory proposing a change of our economic model as a response to humanity’s major challenge of eliminating poverty within the means of the planet’s limited resources.This is an evening not to be missed and there will be ample scheduled time for questions and discussion. As usual\, supper is included in the ticket price.

DESCRIPTION:In the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle\, the way we live with our rivers is at the front of many people’s minds. While it is difficult to discuss for many people\, having a conversation now about the future of river management and flood protection in our region is the only way we can minimise impacts on our communities in the future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForest & Bird’s Freshwater Advocate\, Tom Kay will be talking about how the way we have managed our environment has exacerbated flooding and disaster risk\, the impact of flood protection engineering on our rivers and communities\, and the approach we could be taking instead. \n\nTom Kay grew up in Hawke’s Bay but now lives in Wellington with his partner\, where he works as Forest & Bird’s Freshwater Advocate. \nTom developed a keen passion for rivers whitewater kayaking on the Mohaka River throughout his childhood and continues to kayak around Aotearoa. Tom has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Master of Science in Ecology from Massey University in Palmerston North – where his MSc research focused on measuring changes in river habitat over time. \nTom has worked at Forest & Bird for the better part of six years and has also worked briefly as a Policy Advisor at an environmental consultancy\, as a field team member in a predator control R&D organisation\, and as a raft guide. \nTom’s current interest is figuring out how to get decision-makers and policy-writers to protect the natural character and habitat of rivers\, and make ‘room for rivers’\, rather than just focus on water quality\, quantity\, and flood protection engineering.

DESCRIPTION:Keynote address by Professor Tim Naish and Professor Richard Levy.\nWith supporting presentation by Cawthron’s Dr Anna Berthelsen and Jacqui Stuart \nMelting land ice is now the single largest driver of global sea-level rise. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated “2m by 2100 cannot be ruled out”\, depending on how rapidly the Antarctic ice sheet melts and how quickly we reduce global carbon emissions. Coupled with this\, tectonic plate settings are causing ongoing land subsidence in many parts of New Zealand\, including Whakatū Nelson. This lecture will see acclaimed New Zealand scientists Prof Tim Naish and Prof Richard Levy explain how climate change is driving sea level rise and how their science is helping communities throughout Aotearoa respond to the challenges we face now and into the future. \nTheir presentation will be followed by Dr Anna Berthelsen and Jacqui Stuart from Cawthron Institute who will share some of the science Cawthron is doing to understand and find solutions for climate change\, including our work in Antarctica.
