SUMMARY:To EV or not to EV\, that is the question. When and why might it make sense to buy an electric car? by Lindsay Wood
DESCRIPTION:The Nelson Institute presents a talk by Lindsay Wood: To EV or not to EV\, that is the question. When and why might it make sense to buy an electric car?  \nWith advances in the range of electric vehicles\, a snowballing range of available models\, and progressive improvements in the charging infrastructure\, people are increasingly asking when is the right time to switch to an EV. This talk will background the quest to electrify our vehicle fleet\, explore some of the upsides and downsides\, and compare choices for buying and running EVs and fossil fuel cars. Expect some surprises! \n \n\n\n\n\n\nLindsay Wood is director of climate strategy company Resilienz\, and its sister company Clearcut Calculators. He “specialises in being a generalist”\, in interpreting the science and technology of climate for the general public\, and in seeking “multiplier effects” in the quest to make our society more climate responsible. He writes and broadcasts regularly\, including Climate Matters (a “free\, fortnightly and always just one page” newsletter that goes out to some 5000 readers)\, and has developed software tools that make it easy to compare EVs. \n\n\n  \nFor further information: Nigel Costley at costleymarr@xtra.co.nz or 03 543 3101.

SUMMARY:Learning opportunity!! Sustainable Primary Production
DESCRIPTION:Freshwater quality and climate change mitigation are inexplicably linked to the whole country creating a sustainable  environment. The goal of a sustainable future is for both urban and rural New Zealand to tackle together and one that our Level 4 NZQA registered course can help provide some of the  knowledge for! \nThe main topics (in no particular order) include: \n\nSoil and soil health\nFood forests and shelter\nFood Safety\nIntensive food growing\nWater conservation and wetlands\nRegenerative agriculture\nPermaculture\nBiodynamics and seed saving\nBirds and Bees  \n\nMore info here:  https://landbasedtraining.co.nz/course/sustainable-primary-production-l4/ \nAnd this is what we’ve heard from our Nelson coordinator: \n\nThey have just made it FEES FREE.  Whoooooppppp 😉\n\nWe are going to do the lectures at Todd Valley\nI’d like to start on Sunday 10 September so we need to move fast! \nWhile Hort level 3 is a prerequisite\, I’m prepared to consider experience in the area and good learning skills as an alternative.

SUMMARY:Framing Messages around Climate Emergency - WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:The vast majority of people in industrialised countries now accept that global overheating constitutes a serious environmental crisis and that it has been largely caused by human action. Nevertheless\, public commitment to making changes at household and community level and\, most importantly\, to demanding meaningful action from governments\, both nationally and internationally\, remains weak. \nMichael Hanne asks how climate activists can “frame” discussion more effectively to turn public anxiety into upward pressure on government to act. \n \nMore info on this webinar\, organised by Our Climate Declaration\, available here: Framing Messages around the Climate Emergency
