SUMMARY:Māori Engagement Training
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to share with the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum community an opportunity provided by Peter Lawless\, Director at The Lawless Edge Ltd and Facilitator at Phoenix Facilitation. \nPeter invites us to deepen our understanding of the Māori worldview and principles to develop the capacity of the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum community to engage positively with the Māori in te Tau Ihu o te waka a Maui. \nThis Māori engagement training will be divided into 6 Modules of 6 weeks each. The overall approach will be to follow a koru pattern introducing all the necessary elements from the beginning and then offering opportunities to deepen understanding and capability in each aspect. \nThe objective is for participants to become confident and capable in engaging with Māori in the region. Minimum learning to reach conscious incompetence\, knowing what you don’t know in relation to what you need to know. For some\, it can be the beginning of a learning journey where they can become consciously competent in a range of situations. \nThe training will be divided as follows: \n\nModule 1 – Foundations (round 1 beginning in October 2024 – round 2 in February 2025)\n\n\n\nModule 2 – Te Reo\n\n\n\nModule 3 – Values and beliefs\n\n\nModule 4 – Te Tiriti \n\n\nModule 5 – Māori structures in Te Tauihu \n\n\nModule 6 – Interacting and tikanga\n\nRegistrations to the Module 1 are open now\, and the other Modules will be organised later on. \nThe learning objective of the 1st Module on Foundations will be to have a basic understanding of the elements required to competently engage with Māori on behalf of the Climate Forum. The foundational module (Module 1) will be required for participation in later modules. The later modules are standalone for those that have done module 1. \nThe 6 sessions of this 1st Module will be organised as follow: \n\nSession 1 – Te Ao Māori (Māori beliefs and values – Creation – The Atua (Gods) and relationship to Tangata (people) – Climate and Biodiversity –  Whakapapa).\nSession 2 – Te Tiriti (Reason for the Treaty – Preparation and signing of the Treaty – The versions – Legal status – Relationship to individuals).\nSession 3 – Te Reo Rangatira (Why Te Reo Rangatira matters – Pronunciation – Basic greetings).\nSession 4 – Interacting (Māori structures in Te Tauihu – The iwi of this region – Mana whenua and tangata whenua – Tribal structures – traditional and modern).\nSession 5 – Communicating respectfully (Tikanga in a range of situations – Mihi and powhiri).\nSession 6 – Integrating for engagement (Drawing the understanding together – Where to go for more information or training – Future modules).\n\nDue to the great value of this opportunity and the fact that places are limited\, we strongly encourage participants to commit to coming to the sessions of the Module they’ve decided to register to. \nThe first module is offered a second time in February\, and we ask participants to contribute with a Koha when you register for the Module (including 6 sessions of 1 hour each)\, which will help further the goals of the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum. \nThis round begins on Tuesday 4th of February 2025 for 6 weeks (with a pause on the 25th of Feb\, and the training ending on the 18th of March). We still accept participants who would like to catch up untill the 11th of February. \nRegistrations for the Module 1 in early 2025 is available HERE.\n \nIf you have any questions about this training\, please get in touch using this address: info@ntcf.nz

SUMMARY:Whakatū Nelson Climate Change Strategy - Discuss and share your thoughts
DESCRIPTION:“Global efforts to address climate change are falling short. Whakatū Nelson must rapidly address climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing resilience to climate disruption. \nWhat we do now is crucial for determining our future. Tackling global greenhouse gas emissions will require coordination at an unprecedented scale – every community\, city and country needs to do their part. Although Nelson’s greenhouse gas emissions are small in the global context\, what we do in our city matters. \nAs the effects of climate change are increasingly being felt in Whakatū Nelson\, it is crucial that we take action now to reduce the disruption that climate change will cause to our lives and the things we care about. \nWhen it comes to the climate\, we’re all on the same team. We all share responsibility to act now\, particularly for future generations who will be impacted the most by climate change. \nThe draft Whakatū Nelson Climate Change Strategy is our path forward. It shows all of us – Council\, businesses\, landowners\, community groups\, iwi and whānau\, individuals – the roles we can play in tackling climate change. It is our collective roadmap to reduce emissions and prepare for unavoidable changes. It asks us to meet the needs of today without borrowing from tomorrow”. \nMore information on the Shape Nelson website HERE. \nThe Draft Climate Change Strategy can be read HERE. \nNelson City Councils also organised the opportunity for the Community to engage\, learn\, and discuss about this important Strategy. \nTherefore they are organising climate conversations\, on Mondays\, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 1pm at the Cultural Conversations Hub from 10th of March to the 17th of April (123 Bridge Street\, in Nelson). Everybody is welcome to grab a cup of tea while listening or discussing with key speakers. See the full program HERE.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Boston - Trust\, Science and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Trust\, Science and Climate Change \nClimate scientists tell us that we’re heading for a world so warm that our grandchildren’s lives will be miserable. \nIndustry tells us to keep consuming fossil fuels or even constructs misinformation to ensure that we’ll do so. \nPeople elect politicians that assign low priority to acting on this information\, or even deny its truth. \nThis is deeply concerning. Whom do you trust with your future and why? \nWe have an opportunity to discuss this with an Emeritus Professor of Public Policy in Jonathan Boston who will be visiting Nelson. Come to Pūtangitangi/Greenmeadows 5.30-7pm Friday 21st March. \nJonathan Boston  ONZM – Emeritus Professor of Public Policy – Wellington School of Business and Government | Ōrauariki – Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington \nPlease register here if you plan to come. SUMMARY:Give feedback on NCC’s new climate plan - Online brainstorming session
DESCRIPTION:As you may know\, Nelson City Council has published its Climate Strategy and Action Plan. \nWe were very pleased that it contains the target emissions reduction figure that the Forum Targets Group had calculated as one of its two choices of target. It contains many other admirable features\, such as appropriate attention to iwi climate plans. \nIt deserves a thoughtful response from the Forum. In particular the NCC climate team are eager for community feedback on community plans for emissions reduction and adaptation to place alongside actions that the council plans. \nWe are also eager to counter some arguments that came up in council discussions\, and that may be raised in future to weaken the plan. \nThe Climate Forum plans to have an online session to generate material for a well-considered submission on this plan. This will be on Tuesday\, April 1st\, 7.30-9pm. \nThe Forum’s Submissions Group will take the material generated by this session and put together a submission to present our ideas to the council. \nYou can join this session with this zoom link (password if requested is NTCF – email coordinator@ntcf.nz if you face troubles to connect) and it is strongly recommended that you read the NCC Climate Plan first (available here) and give some thought to ten questions that will be addressed in our submission (here are the questions).

SUMMARY:Wildlife of the Southern Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Why a trip to the Sub Antarctic Islands?  It was a personal interest trip to see the southern part of New Zealand. The talk will give an impression of visiting the islands from a novice’s point of view. The islands we visited were Campbell Island\, Auckland Islands and the Snares.  A great resource for the islands is the book “Galapagos of the Antarctic” by Rodney Russ and Aleks Terauds. \nLesley grew up in Christchurch and attended the University of Canterbury where she earned a BSc Hons degree in geology. Since it was 1970\, she could not get a job in New Zealand\, so ended up in the outback of Western Australia working for a mining company looking for nickel. Next she married an American and moved to California where she attended the University of California at Berkeley earning a MS in Engineering Geology. Then it was back to New Zealand where her daughter and son were born. The stay was short lived\, and the family relocated to northern California in 1980. Lesley reinvented herself as a teacher and spent twenty years teaching special education in the public school system. She was active with the Boy Scouts while her son grew up in the programme. Lesley has always been active as a volunteer in her community such as being on committees and doing gardening projects. Finally\, after her retirement\, three of the family relocated back to New Zealand and have made a home in Nelson. \nTalk is at 2pm on Sunday 1st of June. \nMeet in the Activities Room\, Nelson Public Library. \nCost: $3. Pay at the door or you can direct credit 03-1354-0183881-00
