SUMMARY:ONLINE - Taking Care of our Rivers in the Face of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This winter’s extreme conditions\, which are likely to recur\, highlight two options for adaptation: keep building dikes and rebuilding as before\, or change course by learning from nature and adapting to the rhythms of our rivers. \nEnvironmental scientist and resource management expert Tom Kay will present evidence about how environmental management has exacerbated the risks of flooding and disasters and the impact of flood protection structures on our rivers and communities. Kay will propose solutions for managing land around rivers as our warming climate increases flood risk. \nMaking space for rivers and allowing them to reclaim parts of their natural floodplains in strategic locations is a natural solution to climate change that will protect communities from devastating floods while restoring the environment and improving local recreational opportunities. \nRegister here. \n  \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2025. SUMMARY:Motueka Community Film Circle - The Eternal Song - Motueka
DESCRIPTION:Join the Motueka Community Film Circle for a screening of The Eternal Song\, a documentary about the healing power of Indigenous cultures around the world. \nFor thousands of years\, Indigenous peoples lived in deep connection with the earth\, while stewarding ancestral land and wisdom. Narratives of colonialism\, capitalism and individualism have fostered a modern mindset that emphasised our separation from the earth\, each other and the ancestral realm. \nIn 2022\, a film crew set out to document the impact of colonisation on Indigenous communities. The Eternal Song is the first of 12 feature-length documentaries that reveal the inner life of these cultures around the globe. \nThis film is a cinematic journey through timeless lands and indigenous cultures\, inviting us all – both indigenous and coloniser – to heal and find connection. \nThe film will begin at 7pm sharp (doors open at 6.30pm) and will be followed by a 30-60 minute facilitated group conversation. \nClick here to see the film trailer. \nRegistrations are essential and can be made here. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2025. SUMMARY:Planning for the Future of Nelson Tasman Together - Stoke
DESCRIPTION:Are you worried about sea level rise\, flooding\, earthquakes\, and bushfires? \nDo you wonder what Nelson City Council is doing about these increasing risks? \nDo you want to explore how climate change will affect where you live and what you and your community could do? \nNelson Tasman Climate Forum and Te Tauihu Community Development Agency are hosting a discussion on these matters\, with Marie Becdelievre\, Adaptation Lead for Nelson City Council. \nCome play\, ask questions\, and help shape how Nelson Tasman plans to live well as things change.\nClimate change is already reshaping life in Nelson Tasman\, but we can continue to live well by working together. Join us for an interactive evening where we’ll look at risk\, how Councils assess it\, and unpack what adapting looks like here. \nWe’ll look at ways of planning for uncertain changes and keeping our options open. We’ll make clear who can do what – individuals and community groups\, iwi\, businesses\, and government – and talk honestly about the roadblocks and the real opportunities for our people and environment. Then we’ll switch to a short game and a big Q&A: bring your questions\, stories\, and concerns so we can test ideas together and find the information or support that people need next. \nTake the Jump Aotearoa will be at the Isel Park Twilight Market – right next door to Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows – if you’d like to grab a bite to eat and say hello before this event begins. \n\nInterested? Please register HERE. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2025. See the full program here.

SUMMARY:Potting up Party (for schools only) - Hope
DESCRIPTION:Native plant restoration is climate action. \nHope school\, in collaboration with Tasman Enviroschools\, the Tasman Bay Guardians and the Roding Catchment group are growing native plants to revegetate the riparian zone along the Aniseed river. \nVegetated riparian zones help to filter out toxins and sediment from rainfall events\, while creating habitat for native ecosystems to thrive. \nThis event is for Primary school students to learn about and participate in potting up native plants for conservation. Students will learn about different kinds of native plants and their niche in the native ecosystem. \nThis is a closed event; however\, Hope School will be opening its doors to visiting school groups on the day. \nPlease contact Prashanti.Lovegrove@tasman.govt if you have a school group interested in attending this event. \n  \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2025. SUMMARY:ONLINE - We can meet Nelson Tasman's emissions targets!
DESCRIPTION:In a split vote in July\, Nelson City Council adopted  science-based climate targets of 8.3% annual decrease for long-lived gases\, and 1.55% decrease for methane. \nVoices around the table said it couldn’t be done\, which created a challenge that was picked up by five members of  the Climate Forum. With detailed  calculations\, they’ve explored one pathway to illustrate that it can be done\, with an integrated suite of actions accompanied by strong engagement of Nelson citizens. \nSpeakers in this webinar will be several of the team members (Lindsay Wood\, Peter Olorenshaw\, Jim Sinner\, David Ayre\, Joanna Santa Barbara). SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Workshop - Lower Moutere
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop for those who would like to deepen their appreciation of the natural world with a pencil in hand. \nNature Journaling is the practice of observing nature\, and recording these impressions in a journal. No need to be a skilled artist for this! The course is open to people of all artistic levels and will focus on the connections and joy we can experience when we hone our skills of quiet observation and artistic expression. \nThe workshop will start with a small welcome game outside and then move inside for some journaling games and warm-up activities. \nEveryone will head outside and have a quiet time journaling and then come back together to share. \nIt is recommended children under the age of 10 years old have a guardian to help them. \nThe course will be led/facilitated by Jolie Simpson\, who oversees the Farm to Table programme at the Motueka Steiner School. For many years\, Jolie has used journaling in her teaching as a way to help children connect more deeply with their learning and to capture the beauty of outdoor experiences in a personal and meaningful way. \nParticipants will receive a notebook and pencil to use for the session and to take home. \nCost of event: $15 for adults\, $10 for children \nLocation: Riverside Hall\, 289 Main Road Lower Moutere\, Motueka \nNumber of attendees is limited\, so please register here.

SUMMARY:Edible Bicycle Tour - Stoke & Nelson
DESCRIPTION:Take a bicycle tour of public orchards and a delightful private backyard garden project in central Nelson. John-Paul Pochin (Urban Farmers)\, Kelli Campbell\, and Rachael Curson (Whakatū Food Sovereignty Project) will be your guides\, describing food harvesting opportunities on public land as well as learning how to turn your garden into a food-growing paradise. Kelli will also outline a fruit tree mapping project that will draw on reports from local volunteers. \nThis is a hop on-hop off tour\, in which attendees are welcome to join for a part of the journey. \nThe edible bicycle tour will begin at 10am at Ranui Park with a 45-minute introduction and finish with a picnic at Branford Park at around 1pm. Stops will include Victory Community Garden\, various public fruit trees and orchards and a private garden. Specific details of the tour will be sent to registrants before the event. \nRegistration (here) is recommended so organisers can update attendees on the route and postponement in the case of inclement weather. \n \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2025.
