SUMMARY:Active Hope: Deep Ecology & Yoga Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Anahata Yoga Retreat is delighted to welcome Inna Alex who will be hosting the Active Hope – Deep Ecology & Yoga Retreat gathering at our Golden Bay Retreat. Kindly note that the teachings included in this gathering may not reflect Anahata’s tradition and philosophy. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an extraordinary\, heart-felt journey into enhanced connection and empowerment through Deep Ecology & Yoga \nWhy join this Deep Ecology retreat? \nWe are alive at an extraordinary moment in time. It is a time of growing uncertainty\, yet also time of great possibility when creativity\, courage and collective action can help cultivate change. This is a time when many of us are seeking ways to reconnect to one another and to the living Earth. \nDeep ecology is a holistic approach to facing the current challenges on Earth that brings together thinking\, feeling\, spirituality and action. It involves moving beyond the individualism of Western culture also seeing ourselves as part of the Earth. This leads to a deeper connection with life\, where Ecology is not just seen as something ‘out there’\, but something we are a part of and have a role to play in. \nIn this retreat\, we will draw on the work of Joanna Macy\, John Seed and Arne Naess. We will use theories and interactive practices from The Work That Reconnects to reconnect to out own true nature\, the web of life\, and to our human community. \nThis work supports us to experience first hand that we are larger\, stronger\, deeper\, and more creative than we have been brought up to believe. Opening our hearts and our minds to the love\, the grief we feel for our world\, empowers us to act on behalf of the Earth. \nMore info on this retreat here: Active Hope: Deep Ecology & Yoga Retreat – Anahata Yoga Retreat (anahata-retreat.org.nz)

SUMMARY:Repair with Flair Student Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate retro and restyled fashion creations made by local students!  Every year heaps of clothing goes to landfill and by recycling and refashioning old items we can reduce our impact on the environment while having fun. \nStarting from noon there will be short talks and interactive workshops by local community groups who focus on reducing\, reusing and repurposing clothing waste. Then at 1pm the ‘Repair with Flair’ fashion show begins. Prizes will be given for the most creative\, best background story\, and best handywork. Students who are keen to enter can register here. \nEntry to the event is free\, and light refreshments will be available for a small charge. The event is being organised by the Waimea and Nelson Soroptimists clubs and is a follow-on from the 2023 ‘Clothing Revolution’ event. \nBy preventing clothing to landfill we are helping to reduce carbon emissions. Fashion (mostly women’s clothing) is responsible for at least 2-8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. \nLearn how acting on “Clothing” can regenerate our planet here:  Clothing I Project Regeneration \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival. SUMMARY:Learn how to make compost!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to plan\, build\, and maintain a compost heap.  \nOrganic nursery operator Rex Hunt will demonstrate how you can make your own compost in a short period of time. He takes a science-based approach and will explain the difference between a hot compost (short period) and cold compost (longer period). You will get to see one-year-old compost\, one-week-old compost and will make a compost pile on the day\, with a handout to take away. Come with your questions\, and any problems you may have experienced. \nRex has run an organic plant nursery since 1980 and has focused on making his own compost.  \nThis event is free\, though a Koha donation is welcome. SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Streets for people or roads for cars? How streets and community wellbeing interact.
DESCRIPTION:Join Simon Kingham\, Professor of Geography at the University of Canterbury and Chief Science Advisor to the Ministry of Transport\, for this lunchtime webinar about how streets and community wellbeing interact. \nStreets are usually seen as places for motor vehicles\, but what happens if we rethink their role as places that can strengthen our communities and enhance wellbeing? What happens when we change their form and function through things\, such as changing traffic volumes and speeds\, restricting traffic\, making walking and cycling more attractive\, and introducing street furniture and places for social interaction? This presentation will examine some of these types of changes that have been seen in Ōtautahi Christchurch. \nThis event is co-hosted with the Nelson Sustainable Transport Trust: NELSUST. SUMMARY:Sustainable Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:A tour of farms in Golden Bay that showcase some of the great initiatives that are happening to make farms more sustainable. See regenerative approaches in action including different ways to nurture soil health\, mixed sward approaches\, use of trees and riparian plantings\, and mixed animal farming. \nFarmers are the potential super-heros of climate change. Regenerative farming practices nurtures a healthy soil microbiome. This sequesters significantly more carbon\, and reduces the amount of methane (another greenhouse gas) produced by cows. The potential impact of this is significant. There are many examples of good farm stewardship here in the Bay – we will be visiting 3 good examples that showcase a range of approaches. \nMeet at the Takaka I site and join our bus tour. Commentary and Q&A will be provided throughout the tour by sustainable land management expert Sol Morgan. We will stop for lunch at the Sustainable Living Centre where an optional $15 organic lunch will be available for purchase. \nMeet at the Takaka I site and join our bus tour. More information and registration (limited places) here. Note that the event is now sold out\, but there is the possibility of registering on a waiting list. People on this list will be contacted directly in the event that capacity is increased. \nWe want to encourage carpooling\, so please use this link if you want to share your care or if you need a ride. \nLearn more on how Regenerative Agriculture can help to regenerate our planet here: Regenerative Agriculture I Project Regeneration. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival. Another type of fun\, but with the same community compost crew coming together and doing some more parts of the volunteer mahi that need to take place so the compost project is successful. \nLet’s meet at “The Yard” behind Tim’s Garden\, Nelson Whakatū. \nCompost Club is a free event\, open to all ages and abilities. Shared snacks and/or Kai provided after. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival. See the full program here.
