SUMMARY:Healthy Homes and Sustainable Living
DESCRIPTION:Come for a combined workshop and tour of Nelson’s first Certified Passive House and its fertile and productive garden. \nNathan and Yuki\, two of Nelson’s leading experts in sustainable living\, will show you practical ways to build or renovate your own home and create a flourishing garden. Their architect-designed home\, conveniently located near Nelson Hospital\, stays warm year round and is heated almost entirely by the sun. \nIf you’re planning to build a new home or renovate your existing house\, this workshop will help you understand the key questions to ask before you begin. Nathan and Yuki will share practical advice on designing and renovating for better energy efficiency\, explain which improvements deliver the greatest benefits\, and help you prioritise where to invest your budget. Everyone deserves to live in a warm\, healthy and comfortable home\, and their goal is to give you the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions. \nYuki and Nathan will also demonstrate how to make biochar – a simple but powerful way to improve soil fertility while helping tackle climate change. Biochar stores carbon in the soil for hundreds of years\, making it an effective carbon sequestration strategy. \nThe couple are also transforming former pasture into a natural farm that works with nature rather than against it. Since 2020\, they’ve planted 1\,000 native trees and 50 fruit and nut trees. What began as hard\, compacted soil with virtually no earthworms is steadily becoming healthy\, fertile\, living soil – a real-life example of regenerative land management in action. \n  \nSchedule: \n1-1:15 pm: Orientation \n1:15-1:45pm: Our energy-efficient house and sustainable features\, Q&A \n1:45-2:15pm: Adding sustainable features and retrofitting existing houses (insulation\, solar panels)\, Q&A \n2:15-3:00pm: Transitioning to natural farming. Biochar making demonstration (weather permitting). If it rains\, we will discuss climate actions through gardening. \n  \nRegister on Humanitix HERE \nPhoto credit: Nathan Edmondston_Yuki Fukuda_Whakatū Passivhaus \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. SUMMARY:Deep Time Walk
DESCRIPTION:Every rock beneath your feet\, every breath you take\, every living being you encounter is part of an extraordinary story that began 4.6 billion years ago. \nOn this guided 4.6-kilometre walk\, we journey through the unfolding history of our planet. Each metre represents one million years\, allowing us to experience Earth’s vast story at a human pace. Along the way\, we pause at key moments in Earth’s evolution – from the birth of our planet and the emergence of life\, through forests\, dinosaurs and mammals\, to the appearance of humans in the final moments of the walk. \nThe Deep Time Walk is an invitation to experience our place within the living Earth. Through storytelling\, reflection and time in nature\, many participants leave with a renewed sense of wonder\, belonging and gratitude for the remarkable lineage of life of which we are a part. \nWhether you are curious about Earth’s history\, concerned about the future of our planet\, or simply seeking a meaningful experience in nature\, this walk offers a perspective that is both grounding and inspiring. \nYour guide for this experience is Jaime Howell\, a trained facilitator of the Deep Time walk. Jaime is the founder of the Centre for The Great Turning Charitable Trust. \n“The walk is one of the most powerful transformative practices I know when it comes to realising in your body just how intelligent life is.” – Jaime \nMore information and registration HERE. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. SUMMARY:Trees\, Tunes\, and Recharge
DESCRIPTION:Overwhelmed by climate change and the environmental challenges our community faces? We all need to recharge from time to time\, and while we might be biased\, we think few things are more restorative than seeing nature regenerate right in front of your eyes. \nThe Kidson family are helping restore a section of the Wakapuaka awa (river)\, which has seen 70\,000+ trees planted on their land and the neighbouring Cable Bay Adventure Park (more info here). They’d love to show you what can be achieved in just five years. Come and learn about native regeneration at scale through their project\, Wakapuaka Mouri\, and stay to enjoy food and music. Bring a dish to share. \n11.30: Trees Tunes and Recharge kicks off \n11.45 – 1pm: Learn about Wakapuaka Mouri\, the successes and challenges\, go for a walk around some of the sites and plant a tree. \n1pm – 3pm: Head to the bach for some kai\, kōrero and music. \nPlease note: Bring sturdy shoes\, or shoes you don’t mind getting muddy! \nMore info on the project: https://www.tet.org.nz/projects/wakapuaka-mouri \nRegister HERE. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. SUMMARY:Climate Fiction Book Exchange and Chat
DESCRIPTION:Introducing the Festival’s first ever Climate Fiction Book Exchange!  We invite you to join us\, either to share the book that has had an impact on you or simply to find inspiration for your next reads. \nClimate fiction can be described as a literary genre that uses speculative storytelling to explore the effects of climate change on individuals\, communities\, and ecosystems. It is not enough for the public to simply be informed about climate change. It is sometimes necessary to bring this future to life through storytelling so that it becomes more concrete and tangible. \nThrough their captivating stories\, novelists help us fully grasp this changing world\, the natural environment that is gradually disappearing and the threat posed by this uncertain future. \nThis is a space to discuss the books we’ve read and would like to share. We hope that these stories will inspire us collectively to take action to create a world in which we want to live\, today and tomorrow. \nRegister HERE \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. SUMMARY:Sustainable Mohua Tour: Sustainable Building and Homes
DESCRIPTION:Jump on board for the latest Mohua 42 bus tour in the highly popular Sustainable Mohua series. \nOver the past few years Mohua 42 has taken people out around Golden Bay to see sustainability in action\, first on farms\, then to visit local renewable energy projects. \nThis year they are turning our attention to the places we live. \nGolden Bay/Mohua has a long history of people building differently: earth walls\, locally milled timber\, novel and cutting-edge building materials\, solar\, off-grid systems\, clever retrofits\, and homes designed to work with our climate rather than against it. \nOn this tour you’ll visit local homes and building projects\, meet the people who made them happen\, and hear their honest experience. Find out what worked\, what cost more than expected\, what they’d do differently and where can we learn and share. \nThis isn’t a showcase of unattainable dream homes. It’s a chance to see real\, liveable examples across a range of budgets and ambitions\, and to ask the questions you can’t get answered online: What did the consent process involve? Would you do it again? \nMohua 42’s kaupapa is to inspire\, challenge and educate\, moving the Bay toward a more sustainable and Earth-honouring future\, one warm\, dry\, low-impact whare at a time. \nReservations are required HERE \nLunch: details to come. \nWhat to wear? \nBring sturdy shoes\, a raincoat\, water and your curiosity. Ngā mihi nui to the homeowners opening their doors to us. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. See the full program here.

SUMMARY:Natural burials - what are they?
DESCRIPTION:Join Living Legacies Founder Lynda Hannah at the Motueka Natural Burial Park to talk about natural funerals\, natural burials\, and why they are an environmentally responsible end-of-life choice. \nLiving Legacies is Aotearoa’s natural funeral company with a sustainable\, holistic\, and celebratory approach to life\, death\, and funerals. \nNatural Burial Parks are the only sustainable way to dispose of our dead in Aotearoa. Less pollutive than cremation and not wasting valuable land like cemeteries\, Natural Burial Parks create forests from burial grounds\, and essentially\, they represent a natural way of burying our dead\, which uses the valuable nutrients in the body to establish new life. They are also a way of remembering our loved ones by creating a sense of permanence in the form of a forest or park\, where people can walk and remember those who are buried there. It could almost be described as a way to live forever. \nSome questions that may come up: \n\nWhat is a natural burial? What makes a burial “natural” or unnatural?\nWhat are the environmental costs of funerals? What are the environmentally responsible options for funerals?\nWhat you need to know to organise a natural burial for yourself or a loved one.\n\nWhat to bring: A folding chair if you’d like to sit. An umbrella and wet weather gear if it’s damp as we’ll be outdoors. A notebook if you’d like to make notes. An open mind and heart. \nRegister here. \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. See the full program here.

SUMMARY:Public Talk: Rethinking the System for a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Our economic system and the power structures behind it have played a defining role in our relationship with the natural environment. Biodiversity\, native ecosystems and water quality have been rapidly deteriorating over the past 50 years – so where do we go from here? \nGlenys MacLellan will take you on a journey of discovery\, exploring how we arrived at today’s environmental\, economic and social challenges. \nShe will discuss the role of neoclassical economics in shaping the modern world\, and consider how its assumptions and priorities have contributed to the ecological\, social and economic problems we face today. In order to address climate change and the human misery these systems can create\, we need to rethink the systems themselves. \nGlenys will explore what a new political and economic system should deliver\, and what aspects of the current system we should keep\, reform\, regulate or replace. \nThe discussion will be guided by participants and may focus on local priorities for Nelson Tasman\, national priorities for change\, where action could be most effective\, or other ideas from the floor. \nGlenys MacLellan is a self-described generalist and autodidact who is much more interested in trying to explain the thinking behind political\, economic and power structures than the details of their theories.  \nGlenys previously works as a bookkeeper in a variety of sectors. She currently volunteers for the Beneficiaries & Unwaged Workers Trust and is treasurer and member of the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum Leadership Group. \nRegister HERE \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. SUMMARY:Webinar: Carpooling Made Easy with Pooly
DESCRIPTION:Join this lunchtime webinar with Pooly\, Nelson-Tasman’s homegrown carpooling start-up\, to hear how shared journeys could become a bigger part of our region’s transport future. The Pooly app is designed to be a friction-free experience so we can all make better use of the journeys already happening on our roads. \nCo-Founders Vincent Revell and Ben Walch will share their perspectives on carpooling as one of the simplest\, most effective ways to reduce transport emissions while making travel more affordable. \nDrawing from overseas learnings\, they’ll lay out why Nelson-Tasman is well placed to lead Aotearoa in carpooling adoption. \nPooly is a response to the fuel and cost of living crises\, and to limitations of our transport system. It’s also an instrument for community connection. The platform makes it easy to find\, book and manage shared journeys\, giving drivers and passengers an intuitive and well-organised interface. \nVincent and Ben will share the story behind Pooly and the lessons from its recent local trial. They’ll also explain why they believe making better use of the empty seats already travelling our roads can play an important role in the future of regional transport. \nThe session will include a live demonstration of the Pooly app\, giving attendees a practical look at how it works and how carpooling could fit into their everyday journeys. \nThere will be plenty of time for questions and discussion at the end. \nRegister HERE \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. SUMMARY:Always be Naturing Forest ecological walk and meditation
DESCRIPTION:You may have seen or heard of the Department Of Conservation’s (DOC’s) Always Be Naturing campaign. Here’s a chance to experience what it’s all about. Join DOC guides for a forest ecological walk and meditation on the loop track in the Tītoki Reserve. This track winds through a pocket of native bush in the Atawhai hills\, following a clear stream through a podocarp forest of towering tōtara and mataī trees. \nThe reserve is a great spot for birdwatching\, so listen for the calls of the tūī and bellbird (korimako) and keep an eye out for weka. \nDOC’s vision is to see nature thriving in New Zealand. The goal is bold\, but one worth chasing. Many of you share this aspiration. And we know it’s going to take all of us–individuals\, community groups\, iwi\, businesses\, and organisations–working together to get there. \nAlways Be Naturing is a positive rallying cry for Aotearoa to come together for nature. It’s a platform to spark a nationwide movement where caring for our environment becomes something we all do: in our neighbourhoods\, backyards\, and broader community. \nWe want to raise the status of nature\, show the value it brings to us every day\, and help people connect with the incredible and unique environment we have in New Zealand. And we’re keen to have fun along the way. \nTitoki Reserve Walk\, Nelson-Tasman\, New Zealand  (1 km length – 50 m elevation gain – 0.5- 1 hr estimated time). \nBring: Good footwear\, warm clothing\, a waterproof mat to sit/lie on. \nRegister HERE \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026. SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Ready for the Next One? Resilience & Insurance for Rural Properties as Extreme Weather Increases
DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s Climate Action Festival theme\, Our Place\, Our Power\, this session looks at what a future of more frequent\, more intense flooding means for rural landowners — for property decisions\, risk levels\, and what to actually do about it. \nAlastair Clements\, team leader of the Tasman District Council Hazards team\, opens with the bigger picture: climate change\, flood risk\, projections for the future\, and other regional hazards facing the catchment. He’ll also cover tools and information TDC has available for getting a better understanding of the hazards that relate to your property. \nFrom there\, Abby France\, Loss Prevention Manager from FMG Insurance will cover insurance and disaster cover for rural properties\, how insurers assess flood-prone land\, and practical ways landowners can manage risk and influence their cover. \nRounding out the session\, a local landowner will share their own experience of dealing with the floods and their insurance since — what happened\, and what they’ve changed on their property as a result. \nThere will be time for questions after each speaker. \nThis session is about front-footing the risk — understanding the realities\, getting informed\, and making good decisions about your cover and your property before the next event\, not after it. \nRegister HERE  \n\nThis event is part of Climate Action Festival 2026.
