Not because of good policy\, but because the economy is being forced into contraction by an energy crisis that mainstream institutions didn’t see coming – or chose not to. Nathan Surendran connects the immediate fuel emergency to the biophysical economics that conventional policy ignores: declining energy returns\, thermodynamic constraints on transition\, and a coming wave of insolvency and default that may cause more damage than fuel shortages themselves. He presents practical tools for community resilience\, from mutual aid frameworks to fair rationing mechanisms\, and argues that the response must start at the community level because government is not going to lead it. \nOUTLINE: Be Prepared for a Lively Discussion \n1. The good news on climate (that nobody wants to hear) \nNZ is likely to meet its climate targets. Not because of policy. Because the economy is falling off a cliff. Energy price-driven demand destruction is cutting emissions faster than any government programme. Diesel above $4/litre\, petrol not far behind. Businesses are closing\, freight is contracting\, discretionary travel has collapsed. When you can’t afford to burn fuel\, you don’t burn fuel. Emissions fall. This is the climate trajectory nobody modelled – involuntary degrowth driven by energy supply disruption and price shock. \n2. Why this is happening – the energy supply picture \nThe Strait of Hormuz closure and the wider Middle East conflict have taken out a significant share of global crude and LNG supply. NZ imports 100% of its refined fuel. 81% comes from refineries processing Middle Eastern crude. We have roughly 18 days of diesel physically onshore. The government’s fuel plan has no volumetric allocations. Force Majeure declarations have cascaded across every link in our supply chain. The default tsunami – the crisis before the shortage \nEveryone is watching fuel gauges. But the more immediate shock may be financial. NZ insolvencies were at a 15-year high before Hormuz. Mortgage arrears at an 8-year peak. IRD tax debt past $9 billion. Household debt at 165-170% of disposable income. There was no buffer. When diesel costs flow through to freight\, food\, fertiliser\, and farm input costs\, the wave of business failures and mortgage defaults will hit before physical fuel shortages do. It’s the predictable consequence of building a civilisation on a depleting energy resource. EROI decline means we spend more energy to get energy. The economy is an energy system using money\, not a financial system using energy. SUMMARY:Give feedback on NCC’s new climate plan - Online brainstorming session
DESCRIPTION:As you may know\, Nelson City Council has published its Climate Strategy and Action Plan. \nWe were very pleased that it contains the target emissions reduction figure that the Forum Targets Group had calculated as one of its two choices of target. It contains many other admirable features\, such as appropriate attention to iwi climate plans. \nIt deserves a thoughtful response from the Forum. In particular the NCC climate team are eager for community feedback on community plans for emissions reduction and adaptation to place alongside actions that the council plans. \nWe are also eager to counter some arguments that came up in council discussions\, and that may be raised in future to weaken the plan. \nThe Climate Forum plans to have an online session to generate material for a well-considered submission on this plan. This will be on Tuesday\, April 1st\, 7.30-9pm. \nThe Forum’s Submissions Group will take the material generated by this session and put together a submission to present our ideas to the council. \nYou can join this session with this zoom link (password if requested is NTCF – email coordinator@ntcf.nz if you face troubles to connect) and it is strongly recommended that you read the NCC Climate Plan first (available here) and give some thought to ten questions that will be addressed in our submission (here are the questions).

DESCRIPTION:The Take the Jump Campaign invites us to reduce our consumption by making several changes. \nWhile the “End of clutter” shift encourages us to keep our electronic devices\, amongst which our computers\, tablets and phones\, for at least 7 years\, the way we use them\, and specifically the way we use data\, can also have an impact on our planet and can certainly be made more environmentally and climate friendly. \nAdrian Cochrane\, one of our tech’ expert amongst our Forum members\, specialised in software and programming\, will guide us in this discussion\, highlighting how computing is also linked to the environment\, but also sharing practical tips and a mindset for minimizing the impact of our computing on the environment\, as well as policy recommendations for system change\, and how individuals can encourage it. \nInterested in joining this conversation? DESCRIPTION:With the general election coming up\, MPs and candidates often hold meetings for the public (that’s you!)\, and answer questions from audience members. \nThis is where we come in. By asking powerful climate questions – and recording the answers – we can show the politicians and the public the importance of climate justice. That’s why asking questions at a public meeting is so powerful – it gets climate action on the mind of the politician\, and prompts them to make a commitment (whether for or against) that’s on record.
