This Bill proposes to take the four ‘well-beings’ out of the purpose Local Government Act i.e. promoting the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of communities, taking a sustainable development approach.
It would replace this with a focus for local government on good-quality local infrastructure, local public services, and performance of regulatory functions, supporting local economic growth and development.
In conjunction with proposed rates capping legislation, this risks Council funding support for the Nelson Whakatū and Tasman climate strategies and action plans and making them ineffective.
