ONLINE – Taking Care of our Rivers in the Face of Climate Change

This winter’s extreme conditions, which are likely to recur, highlight two options for adaptation: keep building dikes and rebuilding as before, or change course by learning from nature and adapting to the rhythms of our rivers.
Environmental scientist and resource management expert Tom Kay will present evidence about how environmental management has exacerbated the risks of flooding and disasters and the impact of flood protection structures on our rivers and communities. Kay will propose solutions for managing land around rivers as our warming climate increases flood risk.
Making space for rivers and allowing them to reclaim parts of their natural floodplains in strategic locations is a natural solution to climate change that will protect communities from devastating floods while restoring the environment and improving local recreational opportunities.
