Wildlife of the Southern Ocean

June 1 @ 2:00 pm

Why a trip to the Sub Antarctic Islands?  It was a personal interest trip to see the southern part of New Zealand. The talk will give an impression of visiting the islands from a novice’s point of view. The islands we visited were Campbell Island, Auckland Islands and the Snares.  A great resource for the islands is the book “Galapagos of the Antarctic” by Rodney Russ and Aleks Terauds.

Lesley grew up in Christchurch and attended the University of Canterbury where she earned a BSc Hons degree in geology. Since it was 1970, she could not get a job in New Zealand, so ended up in the outback of Western Australia working for a mining company looking for nickel. Next she married an American and moved to California where she attended the University of California at Berkeley earning a MS in Engineering Geology. Then it was back to New Zealand where her daughter and son were born. The stay was short lived, and the family relocated to northern California in 1980. Lesley reinvented herself as a teacher and spent twenty years teaching special education in the public school system. She was active with the Boy Scouts while her son grew up in the programme. Lesley has always been active as a volunteer in her community such as being on committees and doing gardening projects. Finally, after her retirement, three of the family relocated back to New Zealand and have made a home in Nelson.

Talk is at 2pm on Sunday 1st of June.
